How the Metric System Works

Metric units scale mainly by powers of ten. Move from a larger unit to a smaller unit by multiplying by the appropriate factor; move from smaller to larger by dividing. Area and volume require squared or cubed factors.

Important Conversion Rules

  • Length conversions use a linear factor.
  • Area conversions square the length factor: 1 m = 100 cm, but 1 m² = 10,000 cm².
  • Volume conversions cube the length factor: 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³.
  • Temperature scales require formulas rather than a single multiplication factor.
