Decimal vs Binary

Decimal prefixes such as kB, MB and GB use powers of 1,000. Binary IEC prefixes KiB, MiB and GiB use powers of 1,024. Software may sometimes display labels inconsistently, which can make reported capacities appear different.

Bits vs Bytes

Lowercase b normally means bits; uppercase B means bytes. Network speeds are often expressed in bits per second, while file sizes are commonly expressed in bytes.

Examples

  • 1 GB = 1,000 MB = 1,000,000,000 bytes.
  • 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.
  • 8 bits = 1 byte.
