Easy Ways to Remember 30- and 31-Day Months

The Month Rhyme

A traditional rhyme gives a quick way to remember the shorter months:

Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
except February, with twenty-eight — or twenty-nine in a leap year.

So the four months with 30 days are April, June, September and November. February has 28 or 29; the remaining months have 31.

The Knuckle Method

Make a fist and count the months across your knuckles and the dips between them. A knuckle means 31 days. A dip means 30 days, except February, which has 28 or 29.

Knuckle trick showing January to December across two fists, with knuckles for 31-day months and dips for 30-day months, except February with 28 or 29 days.
Knuckle: 31 days Dip: 30 days (February is the exception)

Why July and August both have 31 days: July finishes on the last knuckle of the first pass. Restart the count for August on the first knuckle, so August is also a 31-day month.

Leap-Year Rule

In the Gregorian calendar, a year divisible by 4 is usually a leap year. Century years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. For example, 2000 was a leap year; 1900 was not.
