Overview

A logic-grid puzzle asks you to match people, objects, places or other categories by combining a set of clues and eliminating impossible pairings.

Objective

Determine the one arrangement that satisfies every clue without contradiction.

What You Need

  • Logic puzzle clues
  • Logic grid or table
  • Pencil or digital marks

Setup

Identify the categories and their items. Use one symbol for a confirmed match and another for an impossible pairing.

Logic Puzzles at a glance — a visual guide to the key method and rules.

How to Solve

  1. Read all clues once before filling the grid.
  2. Mark direct positive and negative facts.
  3. When a match is confirmed, eliminate other options in the same row and column.
  4. Combine clues to make indirect deductions.
  5. Recheck clues whenever a new match is found.
  6. Finish only when every category has one consistent match.

Worked Example

If Ava owns the red bike, mark Ava–Red as confirmed and mark Ava against every other bike colour as impossible. Also eliminate Red for every other person.

Strategy Tips

  • Start with the strongest clues that name exact matches or exclusions.
  • Use completed rows and columns to trigger further eliminations.
  • Translate comparative clues such as earlier/later or taller/shorter into a small ordered list when helpful.

Common Mistakes

  • Marking a possibility as confirmed without enough evidence.
  • Forgetting to eliminate alternatives after a confirmed match.
  • Reading “A is not B” as evidence that A must be C when more options remain.

Variations & House Rules

Logic puzzles may use grids, ordering, seating arrangements, truth/lie statements or numerical constraints.

FAQ

Should I guess when stuck?

Prefer a deduction. If you test a possibility, mark it clearly as hypothetical and check whether it causes a contradiction.

Can a clue affect several categories?

Yes. Many clues link two or more relationships and become more useful after other facts are known.
