Overview
Skip-Bo is a sequencing card game. This guide uses a straightforward common ruleset and notes where versions often differ.
Objective
Be the first player to empty your personal stock pile by building shared piles in numerical order.
What You Need
- Skip-Bo card deck
- 2–6 player(s), as appropriate
- A clear table or playing area
Setup
Shuffle the deck and deal each player a face-down stock pile according to the game rules. Turn the top stock card face up. Deal starting hands and leave space for shared building piles and personal discard piles.

How to Play
- Draw up to the required hand size at the start of your turn.
- Play cards to shared building piles in ascending order from 1 to 12.
- Use Skip-Bo wild cards as any required number.
- Play from your hand, the top of your stock pile, or the top of your discard piles when legal.
- End your turn by discarding one card to one of your personal discard piles.
Scoring / Winning
A single game is won by the first player to empty their stock pile. For a series, use the official or agreed match scoring method.
Worked Example
If a building pile shows 6, you may play a 7 or use a Skip-Bo wild as 7. A completed 1–12 pile is cleared to make room for another.
Strategy Tips
- Prioritise playing the exposed card from your stock pile.
- Organise discard piles so useful sequences remain accessible.
- Save wild cards for difficult stock cards or key transitions.
Common Mistakes
- Playing building piles out of 1–12 order.
- Using a buried discard card instead of only the top card.
- Forgetting the main goal is clearing the stock pile, not the hand.
Variations & House Rules
Stock-pile size may be reduced for shorter games; team play is also possible under specific rules.
