Overview

Pinochle is a bidding, melding & tricks card game. This guide uses a straightforward common ruleset and notes where versions often differ.

Objective

Score through melds and trick-taking, usually in partnerships.

What You Need

  • 48-card Pinochle deck
  • 2–4 (commonly 4) player(s), as appropriate
  • A clear table or playing area

Setup

For four-player partnership Pinochle, partners sit opposite. Shuffle the 48-card deck and deal 12 cards to each player.

How to Play

  1. Bid for the right to name trump and set the contract.
  2. After bidding, players expose qualifying melds and record meld points.
  3. The declarer leads; players play tricks under the version’s follow-suit and trump obligations.
  4. Count trick points after all cards are played.
  5. Combine meld and trick points and check whether the declaring side made its bid.

Scoring / Winning

Pinochle scoring varies substantially. Use the scoring table for your chosen version for meld values, counters, contracts and penalties.

Worked Example

A player may score a meld such as a marriage in trump, then those same cards return to the hand and are used during trick play.

Strategy Tips

  • Estimate both meld and trick-taking strength before bidding.
  • Track Aces and trump as the hand develops.
  • Coordinate with your partner through legal play, not table talk.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a scoring table from a different Pinochle version.
  • Forgetting mandatory play rules for the chosen version.
  • Counting meld cards as removed from trick play.

Variations & House Rules

Two-player, three-player, partnership and double-deck Pinochle have important differences.

FAQ
