Overview
Canasta is a melding card game. This guide uses a straightforward common ruleset and notes where versions often differ.
Objective
Score by making melds of equal-ranked cards and completing canastas of seven or more cards.
What You Need
- 2 decks plus jokers
- 2–6 (commonly 4) player(s), as appropriate
- A clear table or playing area
Setup
Shuffle two standard decks together with jokers. In four-player partnership Canasta, partners sit opposite. Deal 11 cards each, make a face-down stock and turn one card up to start the discard pile.

How to Play
- Draw from the stock or, when permitted, take the discard pile.
- Lay down melds of three or more cards of the same rank.
- Add cards to your side’s existing melds.
- Build a canasta of at least seven cards; natural canastas contain no wild cards.
- End your turn by discarding one card. Go out only when your version’s requirements are met.
Scoring / Winning
Card values, canasta bonuses, going-out bonuses and cards left in hand determine the hand score. A common partnership game continues until a team reaches the agreed target.
Worked Example
Three 7s can begin a meld. Adding more 7s until the meld reaches seven cards creates a canasta; a canasta without wild cards earns the stronger natural-canasta bonus in common rules.
Strategy Tips
- Keep useful pairs while watching what opponents discard.
- Avoid feeding a discard pile that opponents can pick up.
- Balance building canastas with reducing expensive cards in hand.
Common Mistakes
- Treating a run as a valid Canasta meld; standard Canasta melds use equal ranks.
- Using too many wild cards in a meld.
- Going out before satisfying the required canasta rule.
Variations & House Rules
Two-player, three-player and partnership rules differ, as do initial meld requirements and discard-pile restrictions.
